Abdul Kanji

Meet Abdul, the head pharmacist and owner of Corner Drugstore. Originally from Pakistan, he attended high school in Tanzania, before moving to the UK to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Sunderland. He completed a one-year internship at Davies Attbrook Chemists in Mayfair, Central London, and continued working in the city for an additional two years. In May 1977, he made the journey to Canada to reunite with his family and embark on an entirely new chapter in his life.

Abdul became the owner of Corner Drugstore in August 1987. He bought the pharmacy with a vision of transforming it into both a family and neighborhood-oriented location. He succeeded. Being a proud father of two daughters and one son, all of his children have played a role in the operations of the store, and together they have turned it into a hallmark of the community for local patients and visitors alike.

The responsibility Abdul feels towards the community has shone through in his work helping Syrian refugees settle into Canada upon their arrival. These efforts garnered recognition from the Alberta College of Pharmacy in 2013, which honored him with the APEX Bowl of Hygeia award. Demonstrating further dedication to patient health, he expanded his skill set by acquiring additional prescribing authority from the Alberta College of Pharmacy in 2014, and he’s also certified to administer injections.

Abdul’s journey embodies a blend of cultures, compassion, and professional excellence, and he looks forward to welcoming you to Corner Drugstore.

Meet The Team

Aganetha Girad

Netty has been with us since 2006. She is our drugstore manager and one of the two pharmacy assistants here at the Corner Drugstore. She was born in Mexico but now proudly calls Canada home. She is a graduate of St. Clair College’s two-year pharmacy technician program in Ontario, and completed her studies in 2004. Beyond her professional life, Netty enjoys reading fictional dramas and spending cherished time with her beautiful nieces and nephews. She has an especially strong bond with the senior patients she works with, and gets attached to the individuals she cares for. Netty is a compassionate, friendly presence that constantly helps us form new genuine connections throughout the community.

Pharmacist

Lijo Varghese

Lijo joined our team in April of 2016, and has been our dedicated full-time pharmacist since then. She believes Corner Drugstore is the ideal environment for fostering authentic connections and promoting balanced, healthy living. Originally from India, Lijo graduated with a BSc in Pharmacy in 2004. After working for six years in Dubai, she eventually settled in Calgary in 2012. She is certified to give injections, and is also fluent in Hindi and Arabic, allowing her to communicate with patients in these languages. Lijo has a passion for travelling, and takes every opportunity to explore Canada’s diverse landscapes in her time spent away from work.

Pharmacy Assistant

Molissa Tse

Molissa is one of our pharmacy assistants, and has been with us at Corner Drugstore since 2017. She specializes in preparing blister packs for our senior patients, and enjoys working as a team to ensure people receive the care that they need. Molissa thrives in the community pharmacy setting, and has a keen interest in medication that she enjoys sharing with patients and colleagues alike. She is also fluent in Cantonese, allowing her to communicate with several patients in their native language. Outside her professional roles, she has an impressive Hello Kitty collection that showcases her lighthearted and vibrant personality.

Pinki Rangan

Introducing Pinki, the friendly face behind our front store cashier counter. Since joining us in 2021, she has left a remarkable imprint on sales and customer service, seamlessly integrating into our friendly, community-oriented team. Her role extends beyond cashier duties, encompassing order management, promotions, receiving, and vendor communication. A seasoned retailer, Pinki brings a wealth of experience to our establishment. In her downtime, she loves finding new mountain trails to explore in the diverse Canadian landscape. Our pet-friendly atmosphere at Corner Drugstore is something our customers love, and Pinki is always the first one to welcome them with open arms, giving them all the pets she knows they deserve.

Community Focus

For more than 30 years, Corner Drugstore has been an integral part of our community, and we’re thankful for your ongoing support. We’re dedicated to giving back, which is why we’re proud to work with and support two important Calgary organizations: Carya and Trinity Place Foundation. We sponsor events like Christmas dinners, bingo nights, family gatherings, and luncheons to bring people together.

Carya has been supporting families and communities in Calgary since 1910, providing counseling, education, and more. Our involvement helps them to build stronger relationships and support with local families. We’re also proudly committed to Trinity Place Foundation, which aids independent seniors with housing and community resources.

At Corner Drugstore, our mission is to nurture a connected and caring community through active engagement and support. By donating door prizes and sponsoring events, we do our best to never forget where we started, and to always give thanks to the people who have made us successful.

Moved to Calgary in November 2022 and needed somebody to administer allergy shots. This pharmacy gave me the allergy shots without me ever filling a prescription there. A great pharmacy service with professional people working there. I merely send an image of our prescription and the medications are usually dropped to our doors on the same day free of charge. In a few circumstances, I sent the prescription after their delivery person left the store and they called him to return and deliver our prescription the same day. It has always been above and beyond our expectation. Thank you for your great service.
